An Anchoress View:
In the east wall of
St.Stephen’s chapel, New Romney Church, between the aumbrey and
the doorway to the high sanctuary, is a small square hole that goes
right through the wall to where, on the outside of the church, in
the middle ages, once stood a cell. In this cell lived an anchoress,
a nun, who had withdrawn from the world for religious regions and
who lived the life of a hermit but who could, through the hole,
listen to and perhaps take part in the church services.
