East meets West
In 2007 Glover explored decommissioned military bases in Latvia and Estonia.
These places had been shrouded in secrecy for so long that they were unmarked
on local maps.
To find the bases, information was gleaned from the internet and talking to local people, communicating through eye contact, mime and scribbles. Local signage being unreadable,
it was never clear whether or not the sites were still out of bounds or what dangers laid within them. As much guided by chance as by plan, Glover’s travels deposited her in windswept, still-secret places, so deserted they seemed to her as if she was the first
to discover them since their abandonment.
In 2009, she travelled to the Peenemünde Museum in Usedom, Germany, where the military V2 rocket was developed and tested, and later to the Nazi holiday camp project in Prora,
on the island of Rügen.
